2.180 (545) Iron Man (2008) #1 ... Marvel ...

Permit us to rant for a bit before this review proper starts: thanks to all the various relaunches by Marvel every couple or so years for the past decade or more, we have no idea which volume this "ongoing" is. Volume 6 or what? So for ease of reference we will 2008 as it lasted a few years from this year onwards ... the only clear volumes of Iron Man, as far as we are concerned was the first run that finished in the 300s ... the Heroes Reborn 13 issues ... then comes the series where life goes back to normal ... that's three volumes and that's the only ones we can remember in sequence ... hehehe ...

Okay

Look at that Quesada cover. We have no idea if a cover can get any better than this. There are so many squiggly lines everywhere but the awesome effort of the colorist has re-done the lines with some in colour not inked and otherwise but ... but it is so good! Look at that shiny bits reflecting. Ugh. So envious of Quesada!

And interiors for this series is by one of our faves ... Larocca. This guy's style has evolved from his days in the house of X to this but one thing remains consistent ... clear lines and great angles. And he proves his capability by doing Iron Man where tech is paramount. Sure his backgrounds do seem sparse at times but it does suit the scenes he is trying to tell the tale and he is fast! Churning these issues out! Machine!

In this issue, we see a Stark that is still on top of the world. He is rich and has his own global conglomerate. He is also a mighty Avenger. And finally he got himself drafted into SHIELD to run it. How does a man manage to do that in 24 hours no matter how smart he is, eh?

Futurist - is the term Marvel granted Stark where we assumed he is a better gauge of what the future may bring to mankind if steered in a particular direction and so Stark goes blindly and arrogantly forward focusing on what are the bigger pieces on his chessboard without realizing a brand new player, someone who is tied to his past but was never on the radar has decided to jump onto the playing field. Just who and how he is connected will be delved into as the storylines progresses but in the opening sequences, we see suicide bombers utilizing a tech that is similar to the Iron Man's chestplate!

How is that for an opening chapter? Marvel - you did it this time!
